66crusher makes its debut with Truth Unmasked, traveling a path forged by acts such as Fates Warning and Dream Theater, only these Norwegians use Thrash Metal as the principal driver. The album proper consists of 10 distinct tracks, although two of the 10 make up the song "Mindtrapped" (with the first piece serving as an acoustic intro) and five others make up the song "Fear." Refined aggression is the style on display here, with guitarists Jarle Olsvoll and Jonny Wolf exchanging riffs and solos packed with catchy hooks and driving rhythms. Olsvoll also handles vocals - his croons are a bit on the annoying side, as he has little range or depth to his voice. The rhythm section of drummer Hakon Bergstad and bassist Oystein
Kummen keeps things tight and at a brisk pace, although the two pull back for the quieter, heavier interludes. The music is intricate but played with straightforward aplomb, so it's easy for a listener to become absorbed into
the proceedings. The aggressiveness of Thrash Metal is never really given its due, but the harsh nature of the rhythm guitar comes through quite well. Good for music geeks and those into more progressive fare. (OR)
